Discussion of Reviewed SRHR act with EHIT Committee of Federal Parliament

Tin mahale of The Safer Motherhood and Reproductive Health Rights Act reviewed by the Nepal Disabled Women Association has been discussed with the members of the Education Health and Information Technology Committee (EHIT) of the Federal Parliament on 9 July 2024.

During the discussion, the MPs committed to discussing the sensitive and specific issues of women with disabilities in the committee. The parliamentarians said that since this bill will be discussed in the Education Health and Information Technology Committee before going to the house, the issues of SRHR mentioned here can be included in the bill.

Chairperson of the committee, Ammar Bahadur Thapa said that although the disability has been categorized into 10 types so that it is easy to provide services based on the severity of the disability. Still, they are not able to get effective services from the service providers.

Member of Parliament and member of committee Deepa Sharma committed that specific and sensitive issues included in the document prepared by NDWA for the safe motherhood and reproductive rights of women with disabilities will be discussed in the committee.

Dr. Tosima Karki said that since the specific problems of women with disabilities were brought up through Tinmahle, it would be easy to discuss and cover them in the bill.

She emphasized that since there may be issues that have been missed of all types of disabilities, she wanted to discuss all kinds of persons with disabilities and lawyers working in the disabilities field to discuss in the committee.

In the discussion, Tika Dahal, chairperson of NDWA, presented tin mahale prepared from the perspective of women with disabilities. Six members including the chairperson of the committee have participated in the program.
