Deputy Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Manjali Shakya emphasized that awareness is necessary for the implementation of the laws made for the rights of persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the orientation and interaction program on gender violence against women and girls with disabilities organized by the Nepal Disabled Women Association on July 31, 2023 in Lalitpur, Deputy Mayor Shakya said that in order to reduce violence against women and girls with disabilities, they should be mentally strong and also should be provided with skills to make them self-employed. She said that person with disabilities in the community should be brought out and made to participate in such awareness programs.

Deputy Mayor Shakya informed that Lalitpur Metropolitan City is trying to make its metropolis disability friendly and accessible. She added that the metropolitan city office building is accessible and have tactile paving in the roads and are also working to add it on those surfaces that do not have it yet.

Meena Rai, head of Women, Children and Senior Citizen Service Center at District Police office, Jawalakhel Lalitpur, said that partnership is necessary to reduce gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities.

Shobha Kharel, Head of Women’s Development unit of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, informed about the services provided by the metropolis for persons with disabilities.

Tika Dahal, chairperson of NDWA focused that the access to justice for women and girls with disability is difficult, so partnership with stakeholders is very necessary. The participants in the program said that a comprehensive movement should be conducted regarding the issues of persons with disability in collaboration with CSOs and the other stakeholders.

Meena Poudel, the vice president of NDWA, made a presentation on the existing legal system for women and girls with disabilities and Dev Kumari Parajuli presented on disability, violence and issues surrounding it.

NDWA has organized this orientation for the Nepal Police based on Lalitpur district, Women, Children and Senior Citizen Service Center under Nepal Police, Justice Committee, Legal Division and Women Development Unit under Lalitpur Metropolitan city, about gender violence against women and girls with disabilities. Thirty three people participated in the orientation.
